Healthy Homes

Presenter: Charlotte Kleinhaus, BSN
This training is designed to aid families and professionals in identifying the issues that contribute to the health of the occupants in a home. Topics of discussion include: lead, mold, tobacco smoke, radon, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, pest control and other home safety concerns. The training will provide healthy home principles to be used in reducing exposure and absorption. Charlotte Kleinhaus is the South West Ohio Regional Resource Coordinator for the Lead and Healthy Homes program.

Education audiologist at Miami Valley Regional Center will speak to foster and adoptive parents about typical language development and some of the developmental challenges experienced by young children. Patricia Skidmore holds a degree in Audiology with a concentration in pediatric applications. Patricia has been at MV Regional Center since 2000 and is an adoptive parent.

Presenter: Panel of adoptive parents and individuals with trans-cultural experiences
A panel of adoptive parents and individuals with trans-cultural and trans-racial experiences will share their thoughts and reflections on the impacts of trans-racial and trans-cultural adoption. Families adopting both domestically and internationally encounter issues of heritage, race, traditions and cultures in their journey. This seminar will explore how families and their children view our “sense of roots”, connectedness, heritage, traditions, and loss of access to adoptees birth heritage. What new traditions and trans-cultural bridges do families build? The panel will be moderated by a CSSMV Certified Adoption Assessor.

Infant Massage / Infant Wellness

Presenter: Deb Tarr, LMT, NCTMB and Mari Jo Rosenbauer, RNC, BSN, IBCLC
This seminar will provide participants with an opportunity to learn to communicate in a new way with your newborn by learning about infant massage. You will learn how to interpret crying, timeout cues, coping, and effective comforting techniques. You will learn how to massage your infant so it is gentle enough, yet gives powerful benefits to your baby. You will also learn ways to encourage overall infant wellness and how to have a healthy and happy infant. Deb Tarr is certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, and is certified to teach “Baby’s First Massage”. Mari Jo Rosenbauer has worked in the NICU at Children’s Medical Hospital for 24 years and is also a student in the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program at Wright State University. She is a licensed foster parent for Catholic Social Services and is also an adoptive parent.

Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Program

This multimedia and interactive seminar will educate parents and caregivers on the dangers associated with shaking an infant or young child. Parents and caregivers will also learn and develop a four-step prevention plan that will assist them with avoiding injuries. Presenter Valerie Rodriguez is a Team Leader and Family Life Coach with the ParentLink Program at CSSMV. Valerie is also certified in the Nurturing Parenting Program. Brandy Pledger is a Youth Development Specialist for the ParentLink Program at CSSMV.

Stewards of Children

Presenter: Denise Uhl Jenkins, CARE House and Michael’s House Prevention Specialist
The Stewards of Children curriculum educates adults to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. The curriculum for the two and a half hour training includes a video, group discussion and workbook for each participant. Pre-registration is required - Seminar limited to 30 participants.

Birthparent’s Perspectives

A panel of birthparents will share their experiences of working through a most important question: Am I ready to be a parent? Women and men who made their parenting or adoption plans will share insights into their thoughts as they strived to make the best decision for their children as well as themselves.
