Statewide Adoption Training Project Begins Second Year

(March 15, 2006) - In 2005, CSSMV assumed the role of coordinating the Infant Adoption Awareness Training Program (IAATP) throughout Ohio. Working with the national grantee, Spaulding for Children, the agency is participating the outreach program funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

“The mission to provide adoption education and information to medical professionals is an important focus,” explains CSSMV Project Coordinator Laura Roesch. “Studies have shown that most medical professionals who treat and counsel women who face crisis pregnancies do not present or discuss the adoption option and most do not have accurate or current information about adoption alternatives and support.”

During the first year, over 200 medical professionals completed training in Ohio. Training feedback from initial participants has been very positive. CSSMV staff plan to present the program to 500 medical professionals in Ohio during 2006.

As the lead agency in Ohio, CSSMV has enlisted the participation and support of other leading adoption agencies, including: Bellefaire JCB, Catholic Charities Diocese of Toledo, Catholic Social Services of Southwest Ohio and Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio.

The program is free and provides professional CEU’s for Ohio social workers and counselors, as well as approved contact hours for nurses. For a complete 2006 training schedule, visit www.iaatp.com.
